The ROG phone is operated by an Overclock Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 SOC, with four "big" Cortex-A 75 cores running up to 2.96GHz and four "small" Cortex-A55 cores up to 1.77GHz, although most game processing Handling is included in the SDC by Adreno 630 graphics chip.
Overclocking makes the chips a bit hot, so the Asus has designed the gamcool system, which uses propagation for thermal conduction and compensation. This system includes a "3D steam room" under the hardware stack, a copper heat spreader covering the motherboard and components, and the carbon cooling pads on the top to increase heat wastage. The included outer aeroactive cooler connects to its dedicated port on the left and snaps into place on the right to quietly cool the cold air on the back panel of the phone to "enhance" heat dissipation.
The phone has an X mode that you can toggle to increase the minimum speed of all eight cores: "Large" core jumps up to 1.2GHz and the "small" core increases up to 1.3GHz. This allows Snapdragon chips to better process user interaction and application requests. X mode also enhances CPU and GPU bus clocks, but in reality Adreno does not increase GPU speed because its frequencies are "hardcoded" within the snapdragon chip.
In addition to promoting frequencies, X mode optimizes memory and reconfigures the system for better performance. Accessing the side sensor, or accessible through the Android drop-down menu within the Game Center app, you will find that the X mode is the red framework app icon, an advanced wallpaper and active on a back burn by a ROG logo. This logo supports Aura Sync, allowing you to synchronize colors and effects with other ROG-branded hardware.
Outside the SOC, the ROG phone includes 8 GB RAM, 128 GB or 512 GB storage, Bluetooth 5.0 and FM radio. It also includes wireless ady connectivity, which reaches up to 7 Gbps to the new 60GHz spectrum supporting theoretical speed.
Powering this phone is a 4,000 mAh battery that can take at least 60 percent capacity in 30 minutes according to Asus. In our test, we found the phone charges 0 to 100 in 133 minutes. This is average for a flagship phone, though it is far from the fastest.
A bit below the average battery life, but there is great hope for an overclocked gaming phone
Assus also claims that you can play Arena at approximately 7.2 hours directly, you can watch YouTube videos on Wi-Fi for about 14 hours, or watch stream music on Wi-Fi for approximately 50.7 hours.
In order to keep the battery life claims better for testing, we have set up a screen brightness of up to 200 nights and placed it through a web browsing test where we cycle through endless websites. The phone lasted 590 minutes before dying. On the same brightness we conducted a video test, as long as the battery died, the video was playing in a loop. This time it was held for 785 minutes.
Overall, Asus ROG phones are just below average battery life, many flagship and even other gaming phones are killing it. When you factor in ROG phones overclocking and other BFI hardware, then there really is no wonder here.
